A desk mat is the one accessory your hands touch continuously, which makes material the whole decision. Here is how the three we stock actually differ.
Full-grain leather
Full-grain is the outermost layer of the hide with the grain left intact. It is the most durable leather you can buy and the only one that develops a real patina — it darkens where your wrists rest and where light hits it, so after a year the mat is visibly yours.
- Feel — firm at first, softening with use.
- Ageing — improves. Marks become character rather than damage.
- Upkeep — wipe with a dry cloth. Keep it out of direct sun, which dries and fades the surface.
- Watch out for — it is not water-resistant. A knocked-over coffee needs blotting immediately, and it will leave a mark.

Vegan leather (PU)
A polyurethane surface bonded to a fabric backing. It is the practical choice, and the most popular for good reason: it is water-resistant, wipes clean instantly, and is usually reversible with a different colour on each side.
- Feel — smooth and consistent, slightly cooler to the touch than leather.
- Ageing — stays as it started, then eventually wears at the edges. It does not patina.
- Upkeep — damp cloth. That is the entire routine.
- Watch out for — sharp edges and box cutters. PU does not self-heal the way leather hides a scratch.
The Heirloom is double-sided, which is a genuinely useful feature — flip it when you want a different look, or when one side has had a hard month.
Cork
Cork is the outlier and the one people underestimate. It is harvested from bark without felling the tree, it is naturally antimicrobial, and it has a slight give that the other two do not.
- Feel — warm, soft, with a little cushioning under the wrists.
- Ageing — lightens slightly; small dents recover.
- Upkeep — dry cloth. Avoid soaking it.
- Watch out for — it is the most textured of the three, so a low-DPI mouse can track differently on it than on a smooth surface.

Choosing by how you work
- You drink coffee at the desk — vegan leather or cork.
- You want something that gets better — full-grain.
- You write by hand — leather or vegan leather; the smooth surface supports the page better than cork's texture.
- You use a mouse heavily — vegan leather tracks most predictably.
Get the size right
Measure your keyboard and mouse together, side by side, in the widest position you actually use — then add roughly 10 cm. Most people order one size too small because they measure the keyboard alone and forget the mouse needs to travel.
